Caixa Catalunya's Les Planes de Son lies in the Àneu valleys, one of the most finely conserved high mountain areas of the Pyrenees, between the Parc Nacional d'Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici national park and Parc Natural de l'Alt Pirineu natural park. The purpose of this facility is to educate on environmental issues and raise social awareness about sustainable development and the conservation of nature and the countryside.

The facility is fitted with an environmental design building that employs renewable energy, and an observatory and wildfire centre, all of which are run on environmentally friendliness-based criteria. At present, the centre has a traditional weather station and an automatic one.
